Sudha Murthy addresses key issues in her first Rajya Sabha speech

Synopsis : The Parliament session was held on Tuesday, Sudha Murthy a member of Rajya Sabha and the wife of Infosys founder Narayan Murthy gave her inaugural speech. She addressed the two key issues that have to be taken seriously. The significance of the Cervical cancer vaccine for the girls from 9-14 and identifying 57 sites as the World Heritage sites.

Sudha Murthy’s nomination came on International Women’s Day. She is an Author and philanthropist nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on March 8. Sudha Murthy, in her inaugural speech in Rajya Sabha, addressed the government-sponsored vaccination program to combat cervical cancer, and for promoting domestic tourism on Tuesday. 

Cervical vaccination to be taken Seriously

Sudha Murthy stated that there is a need to focus on a first key issue regarding cervical vaccination. She added that it is a vaccination given to girls, between the age of nine and 14. Taking that vaccine can keep girls away from cancer because prevention is better than cure. She further added that India had handled big vaccination during COVID-19, and it won’t be difficult to provide cervical vaccination to girls in the age group of 9-14 years.

COVID-19 vaccination – A mega drive

The government has taken all the precautionary measures during COVID-19. They had handed a very “big vaccination during Covid”. COVAXIN is the India’s First Indigenous COVID-19 Vaccine. The vaccine was developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) – National Insitute of Virology. 

What causes cervical cancer?

Cervical cancer is caused because of persistent infection with the human papillomavirus. Sudha Murthy said that Cervical vaccination was developed in the West, and has been used for the last 20 years. Sudha Murthy further added that it worked very well. It is not expensive. The vaccine costs INR 1,400 for the ones like her, if the government takes this seriously and promotes then the vaccine can come up to INR 700-800.

India is a populated country and has the largest population, and it will be helpful for Indian girls in the future. Rajeev Shukla was on the chair, he asked the Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to convey the same message to the health minister.

Sudha Murthy’s Key issue on tourism 

Sudha Murthy expressed her views on domestic tourism, to which she said that 57 domestic tourist sites have to be considered as World Heritage sites. Murthy stated that In India, there are 42 world heritage sites but 57 are still unrecognized. Everyone should bother about those unexplored 57 sites. Sudha spoke about preserving India’s cultural heritage and pointing out landmarks like Srirangam temples and Mughal gardens in Kashmir. There are 2,500 years 2,500-year-old groups of monuments of Sarnath that have not been recognized as World Heritage sites.
