Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Austria on 9th July 2024 for two days after wrapping up his landmark visit to Russia. This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Austria after 41 years. Last time in 1983 Indira Gandhi visited the country.
The way towards stronger ties
During his stay in Vienna, PM Modi met Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and held bilateral talks with Chancellor Nehammer. Both leaders also address business leaders from India and Austria. The two countries are exploring ways to further deepen their relationship and closer cooperation on various geopolitical challenges, officials said.

Before heading to Austria, PM Modi on Sunday said that shared values of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law form the bedrock upon which the two countries will build an ever-closer partnership. PM Modi is scheduled to visit the Indian community in Vienna today. A video of Austrian artists playing Vande Mataram while welcoming him at the hotel. PM Modi is seen cheering the artists for their performances.

Austrian Chancellor wrote a note on his X welcoming PM Narendra Modi, saying “It is a pleasure and honor to welcome you to Austria. Austria and India are friends and partners. I look forward to our political and economic discussions during your visit!”

Sharing a video on X, PM Modi wrote, “Austria is known for its vibrant culture. I got a glimpse of it thanks to this amazing rendition of Vande Mataram.” Three-time Grammy Winner Rickey Kej praised the Indian composer Vijay Upadhyay, who performed the rendition of Vande Mataram.

Later the Prime Minister received a warm welcome from Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer when they met for a private dinner for their official talks on Wednesday. A post has been shared on social media where the duo can be seen hugging each other and taking selfies.

Modi arrives back in India
After concluding his two-nation visit, PM Modi reached India on 11th July 2024 and shared his appreciation and happiness at the warm welcome, admitting it was a historic moment as the first Indian prime minister to visit Austria in 41 years.
