Kuwait Fire: Tragic Mangaf blaze claims 42 Indian lives, including several from Kerala

Around 42 Indians, including at least five from Kerala, were killed and over 50 injured in a fire that broke out in a building housing around 195 migrant workers in southern Kuwait’s Mangaf area. The total number of people who have been killed in the AI-Mungaf building is 49. Of them, 42 are claimed to be Indians and the remaining are reported as Pakistani, Egyptian, Nepal, and Filipino. 

The Tragic Fire Incident 

The Ministry of External Affairs released a statement saying that in an unfortunate and tragic fire incident, at a labor housing facility in the Mangaf area of Kuwait, around 40 Indians were declared dead and over 50 were injured. The incident is one of the worst building fires in Kuwait’s history. It has triggered calls for action against landlords and company owners who have violated the law by housing a large number of foreign laborers in extremely unsafe conditions.

Kerala fire victims

Among the victims was 48-year-old Vadakkottubiayil Lukose, the supervisor with the NBTC group, which has KG Abraham, a businessman from Kerala, as the managing director. He hails from Adichanalloor panchayat in Kollam and has been in Kuwait for the last 18 years.  

The Victim of Kasaragod 

The Kuwait fire incident took the life of Kasargod native Kelu Ponmaleri. A resident of Thirkarpur town in Kasaragod, Kelu Ponmaleri was working as a production engineer with NBTC group. He is survived by his wife, KN Mani, a Panchayat employee, and two sons. The other deceased has been identified as 34-year-old Ranjith, who was also from Kasaragad and worked in Kuwait for the last 10 years.

Modi expressed deep condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a meeting with the team of the MEA and other officials on Wednesday evening to discuss the fire incident in Kuwait. Modi has expressed his sadness over the fire incident and that he is with the family and close ones of the victims of the incident.
