Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erad attended the General Assembly and did something unusual which left everyone thinking about what made him do this in such a prestigious event since the video started getting viral on social media platforms.

The video went viral because the ambassador was seen destroying a copy of a treaty of the United Nations holding a miniature shredder. As we know in the protest it is being said that there should be a vote given additionally to Palestine. The viewers speculated that this might have been the reason why he made such a decision in the General assembly.

The Israelis envoy act

The act came before the UN General Assembly cast their vote 143 out of 9 for a resolution. Palestine is still considered as an “observer” status, asking the Security Council to make it into a full member. The result came in the following way which are as follows- India Voted in the favour of resolution, 25 Countries abstained and Nine nations, including the United States and Israel voted against it.

Erdan said that his act was to illustrate the General Assembly’s disregard for the document. When he was placing the charter in the shredder one of the envoys said “You are destroying the charter with your own hands, Shame on you”.

Why is Palestine still in the ‘Observer’ status?

In the UN General Assembly, Palestine is still regarded as the non-member observant in the list since 2012. The general assembly follows the governing structure, purposes and overall framework which is designed by the UN Government. The membership can only be decided by the Security Council, when the country is on the observer list they tend to possess less rights compared to the other full-time members. Palestine statehood has been an international issue for decades.

The Palestine Statehood has been recognised by 139 out of 193 UN members.

Meanwhile, the ambassador of Palestine considered the UN, Riyad, Mansour called the vote “Historic” and “Significant”.
