Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Iranian Foreign Minister H Amir-Abdollahian, who died in a chopper crash, and said that India will stand with Iran in its “time of sorrow”.
PM Modi wrote in a post on X expressing grief about Iran’s loss stating that this has come as a shocker and he was deeply saddened with the tragic demise of Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He added that the latter’s contribution to strengthening the India-Iran bilateral relationship will always be remembered. PM further extended heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Iran.

The Helicopter Crash
On May 19, the helicopter which was part of a convoy crashed near Varzaqan, while en route to Tabriz from Khudafarin. The aircraft was carrying President Dr Ebhrahim Raisi, senior leaders including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Governor General Malek Rahmati, and Mohammed Ali AleHashem, the representative of supreme leaders in East Azerbaijan.
The Aircraft was lost after 30 minutes after it took off, reportedly it experienced bad weather while it was crossing a mountainous region in the country’s east Azerbaijan province.
India-Iran Ties
On May 13, India signed a 10-year Contract with Iran to develop and operate the Chabhar port. The Contract was signed with Iran to help them plan strategically to expand the trade with Central Asia. India has also taken the infrastructure and trade partnership with the Islamic Republic.
