Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one of the renowned directors of Bollywood. He has delivered the best movies till date where he has shown Indian History through his lens. The movies like Bajirao mastani, Gangubai kathiawadi, Ram leela, Guru and now a Popular drama series –  Heeramandi “The Diamond bazar”.

The world of Heeramandi

The series starts with the royal and rich mahal of Heeramandi where the woman held supreme position in the city. The series has three stories which go hand in hand. First the difference between tawaifs [couretans], the love story and the struggle for freedom. The series is starred by known artists of Bollywood who have delivered the performance so well, Manisha Koirala as Mallika Jaan, Aditi Rao Hydari as Biboojan, Sonakshi Sinha as Fareedan.

The Rise and Downfall of Heeramandi

It is important to throw light on the factors that the director has worked on, the magnificent sets of Heeramandi. The costumes designed for the series bring out the rich and royal dressing of the women there. The women were highly known for their respect towards the art of dance. The Nawabs used to visit Heeramandi to witness their dance. But when they discover that they might be involved in the freedom struggle against Britishers they boycott them. In the series we constantly see that the women suffer because of the circumstances. We also witness that towards the end how they forget all their differences, grudges and ego come together for the freedom movement.

The real Heeramandi looked far different from what is shown in the series. Sanjay Leela Bhansali said that “it can never be as real as art is not real”.

The Place of Talent

In the earlier days Heeramandi was considered as one of the most supreme places in India. Where the Nawabs sent their children to Heeramandi to learn Tehzeeb, Tameez, and Pyaar. Besides, it was a real place for art and culture. Many of them came and used to perform here and showcase their talent.

The women of Heeramandi were considered Noble scholars in the form of art, dance, singing, shayaris and many more. They were more powerful than the Nawabs. As there was a rise in British rule we saw a change in the cultures and tradition. The place of art was completely tarnished and the women were completely ill treated and from then the Heeramandi was known as the red light area.

The amazing artisans also lost their identities because they were referred as Tawaifs and till date everyone thinks that Heeramandi was a red light, but it was much more than that.
