A Heatwave is a condition of abnormal high temperatures, in which heat accumulates in the local environment affecting entire living being in that local area. Heatwave results and exposes everyone to health complications. However, a few simple measures can be taken, especially to avoid heat stroke and exhaustion. Few individuals and infants with chronic medical conditions are particularly susceptible to heat-related illness due to impaired thermoregulation.

What are the measures to prevent heat waves?

The primary reason for a heat stroke is inadequate hydration. Instead of consuming sufficient water, many opt for diuretics like coffee, tea, soda, and alcohol, which leads to dehydration thus, proper hydration is essential for maintaining the body’s ability to regulate temperature and prevent heat exhaustion and stroke. Dehydration can impair cognitive and physical function. Apart from water, one can also have electrolyte-replenishing fluids.

How to preserve food during heat waves?

High temperatures can advance the growth of bacteria, spoiling the food faster and increasing the risk of foodborne illness. Improper food preservation can lead to a crucial issue. Thus, it is essential to maintain proper food storage temperatures, keeping refrigerators below 40 degrees F (4 degrees C) and freezers at 0 degrees F (-18 degrees C). Perishable foods should not be extended beyond an hour, and leftovers should be promptly refrigerated.

Which is the right choice of clothing?

Inappropriate clothing choices lead to the risk of heat-related illnesses. Wearing heavy and non-breathable fabrics can foil the body’s natural cooling mechanisms through sweating and evaporation.

Lightweight-fitting and light-coloured clothing made from breathable materials like cotton that helps with heat dissipation is recommended.

Overview of temperature shifts

The sudden transition between a hot outdoor environment and a cold-air-conditioned space is another common mistake because rapid temperature changes can cause thermal stress. Thus, when entering from the outdoors, one should enter an air-conditioned space slowly, allowing the body to adjust gradually. The body starts sweating at a lower temperature at a greater rate. The blood flow to the skin improves, which cools the body down.

Do not overexert yourself

Overexertion during peak heat periods is another mistake that can lead to serious health issues. One should schedule physical activities for cooler parts of the day, such as early morning, or late evening, and to take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

Besides that, it also faces stringent competition from other media giants like Netflix and Sony, which recently cancelled its own ambitious merger with Zee.
