Delhi T-1 Roof collapse prompts Nationwide Structural audits of airports, announces Naidu

Synopsis : The Delhi Airport canopy collapse incident claimed the life of a 45-year-old cab driver and left eight others injured. The Union civil aviation minister has assured that they will take precautionary measures so that the incident doesn’t occur again. They have redirected the flights; the amount will be refunded within 7 days.

Union civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu assured that proactive measures are being taken in the wake of the roof collapse incident at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal – 1, has stated that a structural preliminary inspection would be done at all the airport across the country. 

Information asked from all Airports

Naidu said that the ministry has acquired a report from all the airports within 2- 5 days, and based on that the required necessary measures will be taken to prevent such collapse incidents in the future. As per the ANI news, agency Naidu told them that they don’t want such incidents to repeat, they will ensure a structural preliminary inspection will take place at all airports.

The Minister expressed his condolences  

Naidu’s remarks came in the wake of the Delhi Airport canopy collapse incident, that claimed the life of a 45-year-old cab driver and left eight others injured. The minister has expressed his condolence for the departed soul and said, the event that took place at Delhi airport was very tragic and he offered his condolences to the individuals who lost their lives. A few people were injured in the incident, they have been taken to the hospital and their treatment is ongoing.

The Minister spoke about the proactive measures and commented that a war room has been constituted to ensure refunds or alternative flights for affected passengers in the incident. He has promised a refund within seven days or alternate flights for those whose flights were canceled. 

Terminal 1 closed

The Terminal-1 is completely closed and evacuated for now. The flight has been shifted to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. The flights that had been canceled have received a refund or an alternative flight. The Civil Aviation Ministry has decided to pass a circular to provide refunds to the people within seven days. The ministry has issued a circular to airlines, that they should not increase the fares. 

Old building was inaugurated in 2009

The Union aviation minister has slammed the opposition Congress for bringing petty politics and spreading fake news over the tragic incident. He further added that he was a little surprised that the opposition wanted to bring in politics in this kind of issue by saying that this terminal was inaugurated by PM Modi but it is fake news spread by them. The roof of the building that collapsed is an old building inaugurated in 2009. It is a 15-year-old building… by taking advantage of this situation they have taken a dig at the government is not a good precedent.

Flight Operations Affected ?

The canopy collapse has resulted in the suspension of operations from Terminal 1, which handles around 200 flights a day. The police have registered a case on charges of causing death by negligence. Delhi Airport, operated by Delhi International Airport Limited said that the roof at the old departure of Terminal 1 partially collapsed around 5 am on Friday, The cause for the collapse is still unknown, but it is suspected due to heavy rainfall and winds.
