Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya has been banned for the next season following the match against the Lucknow Super Giants on May 17, 2024, due to a slow over-rate. Failure to maintain the required over rate leads to suspension, with punishments in line with the IPL’s conduct rules.
During that match, Pandya was caught by the match officials for maintaining a slow over rate. Consequently, he is not only barred from his first game of IPL 2025 but also fined INR 30 lakhs. His other team members were also fined either INR 12 lakhs or 50% of their match fees.

Will Pandya be impacted by his suspension?
Even if switching to a different team in the 2025 season, Hardik Pandya won’t be able to participate in his opening game of the upcoming IPL season. This is the third time in 2024 that Mumbai Indians maintained a slow over rate under Pandya’s leadership.
Rishabh Pant, the captain of the Delhi Capitals, faced a one-match suspension and a fine for violating the IPL Code of Conduct because of a slow over-rate during Match 56 against the Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on May 7, 2024, similar to the penalty imposed on Pandya.
What is slow over rate penalty in IPL?
In recent years, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented stringent regulations in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to combat the issue of slow over rates. Teams are now required to complete their 20 overs within a 90-minute timeframe, which includes two strategic time-outs totalling 50 minutes.
