According to reports, Google has accidentally deleted the account of a $125 billion pension fund, disrupting over half a million Unisuper members, who couldn’t access their superannuation accounts for a week.

Unisuper is an Australian superannuation fund that provides superannuation services to employees of Australia’s higher education and research sector. This states that the members working in the universities, colleges or research in Australia, can have access to Unisuper’s Superannuation services that will help for retirement.

The pension fund users faced a week-long outage due to an accidental deletion of their private cloud account by Google Cloud. Service restoration began on Thursday, but it might take some time for the balances to reflect current figures.

Google Cloud CEO’s Statement

Unisuper CEO Peter Chun and Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian issued a joint apology to the members, acknowledging that it was very disappointing and extremely frustrating. They assured the members that it was not a cyber-attack and that no personal data would be compromised, blaming a glitch in Google’s cloud service, reported the Guardian.

The disruption from “an unprecedented sequence of events whereby an inadvertent misconfiguration during provision of Unisuper’s Private Cloud services led to the deletion of Unisuper’s Private Cloud subscription”, they said.

The duo claimed that it was an “isolated”, one-of-a-kind occurrence that has never before occurred with any of Google Cloud’s clients globally”, stating that “this should not have happened”.

Precautionary Measures

Google has assured that “Google Cloud has identified events that led to this disruption” and took measures to prevent them from happening again. The deletion of data was very unusual and was not expected, soon after this rare outage they retained the services and tried to work on it. However, they have checked the account balances initially on their previous week’s figures, and Unisuper has assured the members that they will get back as soon as possible with a solution.

The proposed entity has its fair share of challenges ahead of it. The Indian media market is constantly changing, and the new entity will have to adapt accordingly. Besides that, it also faces stringent competition from other media giants like Netflix and Sony, which recently cancelled its own ambitious merger with Zee.
