5 new districts to be formed in Ladakh UTs, PM Modi welcomed MHA decision

5 new districts to be formed in Ladakh UTs, PM Modi welcomed MHA decision

On Monday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the formation of 5 new districts in UT Ladakh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called this decision a step forward of good governance and prosperity.

The decision of 5 new districts in Ladakh

In a post on X, Amit Shah wrote “ In pursuit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has decided to create five new districts. The new districts, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Chantang, will take benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny

In an official statement, the MHA said that there are only 2 districts in Ladakh- Leh and Kargil and the district administration was facing various difficulties in reaching the grassroots and providing the public welfare schemes of the central government and Ladakh administration. The decision to form new 5 districts which they are namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Chantang the people of this region could easily access the public welfare schemes of the Central government and the Ladakh administration. This decision of MHA will be helpful in the all-round development of Ladakh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi applauded the decision and congratulated the people of Ladakh through a post on X, he said “Creation of the new districts is a step towards better governance and prosperity. Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang will now receive more focused attention, bringing services and opportunities even closer to the people.”

Ladakh administration has been asked by the MHA to form a committee to assess the various aspects related to the formation of new districts such as headquarters, boundaries, structures, and creation of posts. Union Home Ministry has asked the committee to submit all the assessment reports in three months.

The committee will submit its report to the Ladakh administration and the Ladakh administration will submit the final proposal for the formation of new districts to the Union Home Ministry basis on the report the MHA will take further actions on the formation of the new districts.

Opposition takes on new five districts in Ladakh.

Congress is concerned about the Elected Autonomous Hill Development Council. According to Jairam Ramesh Congress Secretary in Charge of Communications, the Elected Autonomus Hill Development Council for Leh was established in 1995 and for Kargil, the Elected Autonomus Hill Development Council was established in 2003. Will there be an Elected Autonomous Hill Development Council for the new districts to be formed?

The federal government has been facing protests from the Union territory. They want the implementation of the sixth schedule a constitutional provision that protects the tribal population of any tribal area 97 % of the Ladakh population is tribal. The protesters demand jobs, protection of their lands, and a Parliamentary seat for Leh and Kargil each.
